8 Factors to Consider for When Shopping for a New Vacuum

Table of Contents

Are you looking for a new vacuum? Buying a vacuum cleaner can seem like an overwhelming task if you don’t know what to look for in a machine. Here are eight things to look for when shopping for a vacuum cleaner, along with some considerations and warnings.

  1. SUCTION POWER

One of your main considerations when shopping for a vacuum should be suction power. Put simply, suction power is the difference between the atmospheric pressure and a vacuum’s internal pressure. The type of floor determines the level of suction power needed. For example, while low suction works well for hard floors, higher suction is needed for rugs and carpets. Furthermore, there are some vacuums that contain  suction regulating options, which is considered a big advantage.

  1. UPRIGHT VS. CANISTER VACUUM

When determining whether you need an upright or canister vacuum cleaner, consider certain factors. For instance, upright vacuums are better if you want to keep your vacuum on just one level of your house or building. This type of vacuum is ideal for people who have trouble lifting and bending. On the other hand, canister vacuums are easier to manage for tight spots, but they are not recommended if you have a long staircase. In other words, it can be difficult to balance an upright vacuum on stairs.

  1. ATTACHMENTS AND ACCESSORIES

The key to easy cleaning is having the right attachments and tools. A vacuum crevice tool, which is the most common vacuum accessory, is essential for cleaning between crevices, cracks and between cushions. It’s especially useful for removing pet fur. There are some vacuums that include an upholstery tool and dusting brush, which are excellent attachments. A wand extension is another helpful extension that’s used for reaching the ceiling.

  1. CAPACITY

You don’t want to continually replace the bag or empty the cup. That’s why it’s best to buy a vacuum cleaner with a high capacity. This is even more important if you’re vacuuming a large building or house. Also, if your floors seem to have an excess amount of dirt, then you’ll need a high capacity machine. But if this isn’t your situation, then it’s not worth choosing a high capacity vacuum as one with a lower capacity will work fine.

  1. FILTRATION SYSTEM AND SEALING

After your vacuum cleaner has finished sucking in every particle of dust, a filtration system should be able to keep it trapped inside. Thus, be sure to choose a vacuum that makes sure the dust doesn’t escape back into the air. It’s important to know that some vacuums are not sealed at their different connection points. As a result, dust can seep through the various gaps and crevices of the cleaner, regardless of whether the vacuum is a canister or a bag.

  1. VACUUM NOISE: DECIBEL LEVEL

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t like nosy vacuums. Noise can be an even greater factor to consider for people living in apartments or for those who have pets or babies in the house who are afraid of noise. That’s why you need to look for a vacuum with a maximum level that is around 67 dB (decibels).

  1. PORTABILITY

If you live or work in a multi-level home or office, be sure that any vacuum you buy is portable because don’t want to worry about carrying a heavy vacuum both up and down stairs. Of course, you could always have a separate vacuum for each level. Keep in mind that canister and upright vacuums generally have wheels, making them exceptionally easy to use.

  1. REPAIRABLITY

Ask about repairability, making sure that a machine is easy to fix. Some of the main reasons for vacuums to stop functioning and need repairing include clogs, motor failure, electrical problems and part damage. One way to find out about a particular brand is to examine customer reviews.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS AND WARNINGS

  • Consider the areas that your vacuum will be cleaning. Will be used to clean your entire home or office building?
  • For tougher cleaning jobs, such as for cleaning a shop, it’s best to use a shop vac.
  • When choosing a vacuum, be sure you can easily maneuver it around your furniture.
  • It’s important to know that some vacuums are not sealed at their different connection points. As a result, dust can seep through the various gaps and crevices of the cleaner, regardless of whether the vacuum is a canister or a bag.
  • Consider the power cord. Although a vacuum that has a longer power cord can let you turn around in every area of a room with only a single attempt, it does have one disadvantage as they’re prone to easily tangle. This can lead to significant damage.
